Land of Enchantment? Where is that?

Inspired by a few other spaces, I wanted to post a survey question? What is your impression of New Mexico? Or if you’ve been here What is your experience and where have you been? Bonus points if you know where it is at and what country it belongs to. For instance when I told a friend I was moving back to NM, she wanted to know if we would be living near the coast. ......

I grew up in NM.  Love and hate it too!  Miss the food and weather in the wintertime.  But the summers are too hot for my blood.  Miss the family but nice to have a little distance.  Living in CO now and love this place too.  Here's the sad thing, i think the winter is a bit cold for me too.  Never happy...lol  There is nothing that can beat the food out there.  It is totally New Mexican.  The food has a combo of the Indians and Spanish all mixed up to perfection.  The green chile (not chili) is to die for...Red chile is great too.

I was just back there in June.  The attitude is a lil' hostile, but i think it always has been.  I have just grown accustomed to the CO attitude.  Smokers paradise, they have smoke shops all over the place.  Plus, if you really want cheap cigarettes, head to the pueblos for the tax-free smokes.  Of course, you probably won't be that far from a casino, for the gaming.  Plus, some of them have pretty good buffets.  NOT the one in Ruidoso though.  The men can be overwhelming.  Cat-calling and all of that, but you get used to that too.  When you are not around that you kinda of miss that too..lol!  Husband grew up in Santa Rosa, NM, i grew up most of time in Albuquerque and just about 3 yrs. in Los Lunas.  Albuquerque is the best place.  It's real, it's not totally touristy.  It has it's good parts and bad parts.  I guess every city has that.  The driving though is something not to brag about.  But i think with the growth in Albuq. that has alot to do with the frustration.....

But i Love NM and miss it tons.    Jen

When I think of New Mexico I think of Family and Dry hot Weather. I miss it there mainly because of family and my childhood memories. People here on this side of the country seem to think 8 out of 10 times that NM is Mexico. LOL I think it is so funny.

I think of mesas, adobe huts, clay hills, the burning sun, dark-skinned Mexicans in sombreros and ponchos, and bright blue skies.  Did I get any of that right?  (I went through a few summers ago, but I think I slept through most of it!)

i think of those beautiful white sands and of Alomagordo (i'm sorry if i spelled that wrong) where my mom and family spent her teenage years.  We went there several years ago for a reunion for her High School - i thought the whole trip was amazing and beautiful.  ttfn ~ tresise

Hello!! Thanks for coming by my space to share your thoughts ... I too have seen you around in blogsphere and it is always wonderful to get new visitors and such ... Now last summer I was up in NM visiting what was supposed to be my boyfriend... long story short... it was a BAD weekend!!  However... since I didn't get to visit much of Albuquerque (I spent a hr in old town late at night so I didn't get to truly enjoy it like I wanted)... Santa Fe and some of the surrounding artsy areas were pretty fantastic.  Is it my land of enchantement?  No... I had to say that I am continually drawn to Sedona Arizona.. a place where my heart is home and my soul is at peace....  Landscape wise - similar to NM... but in my heart... so much more beautiful!!

Come back anytime and I will try to visit as much as possible!

    Ciao!

Santa Fe is my favorite place. I liked Santa Rosa too. There is lots of history and mystery and interesting culture there. I also liked the area near Lincoln National Forest. Mesa Verde and some places nearer to the western border of the state are also very appealing to me. I feel very sorry for the Indians though. Most of the poor seem to have gotten the worst of the land. The Anglo citizens seem to own the choicest lands. Is there any way to create a balance for them. I think not. I think the best thing to do in this predicament is to make the best of what you have and find a way to make it work for you and to flourish in it. There are some extraordinary places in New Mexico but for the most part I think the transportation system of the state needs to do more to encourage and support tourism and interest in the history of the state. Just my thoughts. Thanks.

I love NM and miss it a lot.  It is beauty and grand and historic.  I graduated from Sandia HS in Albuquerque.  I live in the Pacific NW now and it is pretty here, but I miss the big open skies.  I miss the food a lot too.  Had a lot of good times there and hope to have more!

Did you say Land of Entrapment?  That was the name we gave it after I moved there back in 1980.  I still miss all the color and flavors of New Mexico...there's no other place like it.  Most of my family is still there, but I don't visit often.

I went to UNM, moved there and hated it. I am from Washington grew up with so much clear blue water and trees it was hard. I stayed for 3.5 years and I miss it. I say I have a love hate relationship when I was there I didn't like it so much I missed Wa. But now that I m gone there is a lot to miss. This winter we had so much straight rain all I wanted was a NM sunny, I dont care how cold day! It is a truly amazing place. When I saw the picture of the chile arristra (spelling) I got sad I miss it. One year I bought everyone one for Christmas and it was the coolest present. I hope all is well. You've got me reminicsing now! My Best to You!

    Howdy,
I grew up in California and my mom and two sisters and I moved to ABQ when I was about 13.  I lived there for about four years before my mom got remarried and I moved (or was moved) back to California to live with my father.  I lived in Cali until I was about 28 and then moved back to NM.  Then, about 3.5 years later, I took a promotion with a job and landed in Tucson, Arizona.  I lived there for about 13 years.  I currently live in Chicago.  Yeah, I get around... lol!  I DID NOT move to Chicago... because of the weather.
    I moved for love.  *s*
Now, I want to move "home."  New Mexico has always been "home" to me.  My mom is still there and I go back to visit often.  I miss the chile'.  (Yes, I know how to spell it!)
I have always been in love with the Spanish culture and totally miss the people, the food, the landscape, and the Rio Grande.  I used to drive through Hatch to get to I-25 and would always stop and visit the river.  This is when I knew I was on my way home.
It's funny... my mother does not like mexican food... not at all.  She will tolerate going out for mexican when I come to visit because she knows how much I miss the carne' adovado, carnitas, breakfast burro's, chorizo, a big ol' bowl of green chile from Monroe's, and the TORTILLAS.  I hate those thin, nuthin' to 'em tortillas.  In New Mexico, they are big and fluffy.
I was taught to cook by my neighbor, Doty, and her mother, Nana.  (lol.. no one else would get that Nana part...)  It seems that hispanic women my age had little interest in learning traditional mexican food recipes.  To this day, I make better tortillas, chile verde, chile colorado, carnitas, sopapillas, than any of my hispanic friends.  They all say I'm white on the outside and brown on the inside.  *s*
Please feel free to stop by my space.  I would love to carry on and on and on... about New Mexico.
In fact, recently, I wrote a blog about my dream of moving to NM with my partner and our three kids.  I'm sure... you can relate.
    Vaya con Dios,

Born and raised in NM. Albuquerque to be exact.... Run people, run for your lives! It's like the roach motel... You can come in but you'll never get out. Truly the land of enTRAPment. Unless of course you like breathing dirt, being mauled by giant tumble weeds (as big as cars), and an over plethora of DWI's. Let's not forget the cactus spines, eye ripping yuccas, and silly arguments like stripes on roads that tie up the government here for years on end. I did see something green growing here once. However, it turned out to be rotting bodies dumped in the mesa. I'm really not a pessimist, it just that there isn't even enough water here to fill my glass a quarter, let alone half full!

Well I use to live in Alamogrodo...kind of like a huge bowl of boredom with walls of dirt and rock. However, further towards Cloudcroft the scenery is definitely worth a stop for visual energy. From what I remember(it's been awhile since I've lived in NM) the ppl where far more pleasant then these here Texans. And, let's not forget the fun of sliding down Whitesands.

I really do love NM. I used to run horses in Ruidoso every summer. At some time in the future, I'd like to move back there. Although I haven't spent much time there in the winter, I did go up there for New Years one year. My girlfriend and I came up from El Paso. They had predicted more snow, but, it never materialized. All the people who came up there to ski, were very disappointed.

Hi! You don't know me but I actually know where New Mexico is!!!!! I was raised in Las Cruces (that's in southern New Mexico, just in case you didn't know) but then me and my family moved to CO so that was really hard. Anyway....I'm 14 years old and I lived down there for 11 years before we moved and I miss it a lot!!! New Mexico can be a very hot place. Where I lived, it can get into the 100s. And I would take that anyday now that I have lived up here long enough! Me and my mom used to go the Old Mesilla whenever family came. We also went to White Sands a lot, too. It is a blast out there....until you get really high winds and you're wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Man, that hurts! We have gone to Carlsbad Caverns a couple times and I went to Dripping Springs with my 8th grade class. It was great!! So whenever someone mentions New Mexico (it doesn't matter if I know them or not!), I think of home.
